Daily Record 2010 Influential Marylander
"Up & Comer" Honoree
Terrance (Terry) Hasseltine was appointed Director of the Maryland Office of Sports Marketing by Governor Martin O’Malley in July 2008. The Governor created the Office of Sports Marketing as a partnership between the Maryland Stadium Authority and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.
On April 14, 2010, Hasseltine was appointed to the Executive Committee of the National Association of Sports Commissions, a trade organization representing more than 450 groups and 300 cities within the sports event industry. Prior to the appointment, Hasseltine served on the Board of Directors of the NASC from 2007-10, active member, and 2002-03, first ever events rights holder to serve on the NASC board.
Hasseltine’s primary focus is to market and promote Maryland as a sports event and travel destination. During the 2009 Maryland legislative session, Terry provided an initial report assessing the state’s sports landscape and identified keys assets and stakeholders.
In May 2008, the Office launched its first significant marketing tool: a state-of-the art web site with searchable sports facility directory. The web site is directed to sporting-event and travel industries in the state, national and international markets.
Hasseltine has been instrumental in securing various bid-development and event-support opportunities for the state related to the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup ™, NCAA Men’s Lacrosse National Championships, World Football Challenge (Chelsea v. AC Milan), U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships and the Army-Navy football game(s).
Since Hasseltine’s appointment, Maryland has engaged in over $600 million in economic activity for Maryland and has secured over $150 million based on the following event awards: 2009 World Football Challenge (Chelsea v. AC Milan), 2010 and 2011 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships, 2013 and 2014 U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships, and 2011, 2014 and 2016 Army-Navy Games. In addition, Baltimore, Maryland and Washington DC (FedEx Field is located in Prince George’s County, Maryland) both made the final cut to be included in the United State’s official bid to be presented to FIFA for the 2018 and/or 2022 FIFA World Cup™.
Prior to coming to Maryland, Hasseltine was deputy executive director of the Kentucky Sports Authority (KSA) where he developed a 24-member community marketing collaborative to promote the state as a sports travel destination. Before joining the KSA, he was director of operations for the Greater Louisville Sports Commission, a championships administrator/regional director for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and a site coordinator for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Hasseltine received his B.S. in Sports Management (and Communications) from the State University of New York College at Cortland and is accredited as a Certified Sports Event Executive (CSEE) from the NASC.
