Charles County: Legends, Lore and Room to Explore

Charles County is a place with wide open natural spaces, waterways, woodlands and farmlands. In this setting, it is only natural that the most popular area of sports involve the outdoor adventures of hiking, hunting, fishing and cycling.

Organizations such as the World Fishing League  and the American Bass Association are hosting seasonal tournaments of all sizes each year. Well organized bike clubs are hosting annual rides and events such as the Indian Head 100 held each Labor Day Weekend, bringing 1,000 riders to the county.

Gilbert Run County Park offers boat rentals and fishing piers; just bring your pole and sun-screen and you are set to enjoy the day. Mallows Bay Park is under consideration to be designated a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Sanctuary. Mallows Bay is the virtual graveyard for over 200 marine vessels spanning over 300 years of rich history. An amazing history and eco-system await quiet exploration, great fishing and a place for peaceful reflection. Walking trails, guided kayak tours and small boat ramps offer additional options for the outdoor sport enthusiast! With over 15 boat ramps and numerous soft launches for paddlers Charles County is a great destination for any style of boater.

“Charles County Division of Tourism has identified eco-tourism and outdoor recreation as one of our fastest growing and most marketable tourism assets. We are a county proud of our heritage and our natural beauty and are prepared to develop those assets and contribute to the growing trend for low impact, interactive outdoor activity in a family friendly environment,” stated Debra Pence, Chief of Tourism, Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism.

Aside from the abundant water sports and activities offered, Charles County is a popular biking destination with routes ranging in difficulty from the flat, paved 13.1 mile Indian Head Rail Trail for the young family, to rural roads and scenic by-ways challenging even the most experienced riders.
