Region’s Top Wrestlers Take to the Mat

The sports scene around the state the past few weeks has been dominated by the purple and black, but the Baltimore Ravens weren’t the only star attraction in town this past weekend. One of the state’s largest high school dual wrestling tournaments took place this past Friday and Saturday at Archbishop Spalding High School.  The Cavalier Duals, now in its fourth year, draw some of the top schools from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The biggest rivalry that has developed during the two-day event is between Archbishop Spalding and Georgetown Prep.  Spalding won the duals last year, beating Georgetown Prep in the final round.  Both schools had been looking forward to a rematch after last year’s exciting meet, and both squads got what they wanted: a rematch.  Georgetown Prep and Spalding met in the finals again, and this time Georgetown Prep took home top honors.

Georgetown Prep, which is located in Bethesda, only surrendered 91 points to their opponents in the seven dual meets, allowing less than 10 points to four teams, including a shut out of Stone Bridge High School from Virginia. Spalding entered the finals against Georgetown Prep allowing only 92 points for the tournament.

Spalding was pretty pleased with their performance, despite the loss.  The Cavaliers lost five of their top wrestlers from last year to graduation and one this year to a season-ending knee injury.  They fell only seven points shy of Georgetown Prep for the tournament victory.  Georgetown Prep and Spalding entered the tournament ranked third and fourth overall in the state, respectively.

Arundel High School’s Tyler Goodwin went 7-0, and won the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award. Goodwin was ranked no. 1 overall in his weight class entering this weekend’s duals.

Awards were given to the top three teams, with River Hill taking third place after a win over Arundel in the consolation meet. For the complete list of final results, photos and videos, check out the Varsity Sports Network’s coverage of the Cavalier Duals.
